Livelihood:
As a basic tool to eradicate poverty KICD is engaging in livelihood projects. For the sustainability of these projects emphasis is put on the involvement of the Gram Sabha, the democratic institution on village level, supporting the idea that the villagers themselves know best what is needed and how it can be achieved. Women self-help groups are used as a central tool for change within the community. Also the micro financing activities are mainly done through them. Artisans are supported by design improvement; some of them have become even master trainers themselves.

KICD provides two project facilitating teams for the M.P. Rural Livelihoods Project and has developed the Perspective Plan 2005 - 2010 for Katthiwada Development Block (KDB).
Other aspects like health and environment are incorporated in the projects as well.

Education:
KICD does not believe in redeveloping existing public structures but to supports them to function better. So it is sending teachers to the primary school in Kavchha or taking care of adolescents training in the middle and higher secondary schools in Katthiwada.

KICD runs a hostel for girls from middle and higher secondary schools at its campus and a child labourer school in the Harijan Colony in Kavchha.

The institute is involved in the governmental teachers' training and is vocal on quality education.

KICD supports the Scouts and Guides of Katthiwada Middle School.

Health:
All livelihood improvement does not sustain if health is not amelioriated as well. KICD has an open approach to modern medicine as well as the traditional Indian systems - AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unnani, Su-Yok, Homeopathy).

KICD supports the governmental health system. It participates in the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in the RCH-2 programme (Reproductive and Child Healthcare) in three underserved subcentres (20 villages) covering 17 different issues.

The institute is involved as a mastertrainer for ASHAs (Accredited Social and Health Activist), paramedic assistents in villages for KDB.

Under NACO's (National AIDS Commission) INP+ (innovative programme for positive people) KICD developed a referral system to tackle HIV/AIDS for the tribal region.

It participates in UNICEF's Pulsy Polio programme and Iodine Deficiency Diseases Programme, was active for exclusive breast feeding and against malnourishment and conducted IMR/MMR (Infant-/Maternal Mortality Rate) projects. KICD also facilitated the development of a health plan for KDB.

Environment:
KICD participated in a rainwater harvesting project of the regional newspaper NaiDuniya and for several years in the National Environmental Awareness campaign. It has been a partner to the forest office at several action days.

The institute is a mastertrainer for the governmental Hariyali Rainwater Management Programme, which is implemented through Panchayats, and was in charge of one micro-watershed.

The livelihood projects have also a strong environmental factor, essential in an area traditionally depending on a rainfed monsoon crop: Rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharging. Through these activities, now many farmers can go in for a second crop and a few even for a third one.

Advocacy:
In co-operation with ILO's IPEC (International Programme for Elimination of Childlabour) KICD conducted a project in Kavchha, which doubled the school attendance in primary school within one year.

The institute is vocal on gender issue, NREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee Act), RTI (Right to Information) MMR etc. Several projects have an advocating component. KICD is helping local people to present their causes in the administration, police and courts. It is member in several social committees on block- and district level.

Research:

For many projects KICD has to conduct surveys. So over the years a lot of data have accumulated at KICD.

KICD supports also other institutions in their research work either by parting with its data or providing the campus of KICD as a base for their research work, e.g. informal justice system, traditional medicine system, impact assessment etc.

Charity:
Some of the projects of KICD have a charitable component. E.g. the expenses of the girls' hostel are supported from private donations as the hostel fees do not cover the real costs.

According to the proverb "If you give a man a fish you provide him for one meal. But if you teach him fishing you provide for his life." KICD does not put much emphasis on charity work. But as some donours want to do charitable work through KICD this activity is persued as sincerely as any other, eg distribution of cloths and food.
